Museums are often regarded as sacred spaces within the art world, with artists striving their entire careers for the honor of being included in the coveted permanent collections of well-known institutions. These spaces hold the power to validate an artist’s work (and life); they offer a form of immortality through preservation and exhibition.
In this project, I challenge the sanctity of these spaces by reconstructing and redistributing them. By taking a 1:1 photograph of a blank wall from such an important institution and placing it in a different context, I can ‘teleport’ these unremarkable surfaces to new locales where they do not belong. These blank sections of walls now take on a new life in an altered context.
Accompanying the visual installation, a music player with headphones offers the ambient room tone of the original space where the photograph was taken. The soundscape, like the photograph, serves as a reminder of the original space while simultaneously engaging the viewer in a recontextualized environment.
The final form of this project would require another museum to display the wall taken from a different institution. By achieving a dialogue between multiple spaces, the project reflects the evolving dynamics of the art world. This act questions the permanence, sanctity, and authority of museums. The project interrogates the roles institutions play in shaping the art world, while creating a poetic loop of displacement and belonging.
