This Much
“This Much” is a visual and performative manifestation of an immeasurable emotion—love. The photograph captures my arms stretched out, exaggerated beyond my physical limit,, and extended in the anticipation of an embrace. I digitally manipulated the image, extending my arms to a surreal wing-span span of 18 feet. This act of distortion symbolizes the infinite nature of parental love.
This work explores the tension between human limitations and the boundless depths of emotion. As parents, we often feel the need to reach farther, do more, hold tighter—and yet, we are bound by the constraints of our bodies and lives. The stretched arms in this photograph embody that yearning: a desire to offer love without end.
The final iteration of “This Much” will take the concept beyond photography into the realm of performance art. The 18-foot representation of my arms will be bisected and transported to opposite ends of the earth. One half will travel from an airport and be flown to its antipodal location—the point on the earth’s surface directly opposite—where the two halves will be reassembled. This global gesture will serve as a physical metaphor for the infinite and borderless nature of love. The bisected journey and eventual reunion of the arms demonstrate the lengths that love can travel; it transcends distance and always finds a way to reconnect and hold us together. “This Much” is a visual love letter to my wife and children, and an illustration of a universal sentiment that defies all limits.
